If there is one surefire way to get through the stresses of the holidays, it is to get outdoors and have some fun! With the winter outdoor recreation opportunities that we have in Caldwell County, it isn’t just a fun place for those who visit Lenoir & the NC Foothills– it’s fun for locals too! Whether you are planning to visit or you are exceptionally lucky to live here, there are a number of ways to enjoy the outdoors this time of year. For one thing, it is definitely ski season! As such, it is time to get some time on the slopes at Appalachian Ski Mountain.
Appalachian Ski Mountain is located at 940 Ski Mountain Road, Blowing Rock, North Carolina. It was the first ski area in NW North Carolina and is the second-oldest in the state. It opened in the winter of 1962-1963 and has been a popular destination. It has undergone expansions and improvements over the years, including being expanded to 12 slopes, and the base lodge has gone from 12,000 square feet to over 46,000 square feet.
One thing that you may not know about Appalachian Ski Mountain is that they don’t need it to snow to be able to give you the opportunity for skiing and other outdoor recreation. They have powerful snowguns and a full snowmaking crew that only needs good snowmaking temperatures to spring into action. This $2 million investment has given them the ability to have more pumping capacity than other ski resorts in the region, as well as base depths that exceed even areas that get snow naturally.
Appalachian Ski Mountain is happy to assist first-timers with lessons and children’s programs. With their ski & stay packages, slopeside lodging, areas for RVs and motorhomes, and even a nursery, they have thought of everything to make your stay as wonderful as possible. If you are into winter outdoor recreation, such as skiing, snowboarding, or ice skating, you simply must check out Appalachian Ski Mountain!
